Common Reasons Parents Use to Avoid Crafting with Kids
Crafting with kids can be a daunting task for many parents, and it's all too easy to come up with a laundry list of excuses to avoid it. I’m going to address the five most common reasons I hear from parents when it comes to crafting with their little ones. At Tyrannosaurus Tot and in our home, we’re all about encouraging growth, quality time, and imagination through reading and crafts. Let's unpack these reasons and discover why embracing crafting with your children can be a rewarding and enriching experience for both of you.
1. "I'm not creative."
Many people believe that crafting requires a certain level of creativity, and they may feel discouraged if they don't think they have that skill. However, everyone can be creative in their own way. Don't be afraid to try new things and make mistakes. You don't need to be artsy or known as crafty; it’s not about being perfect; it’s about the process and having fun doing it.
2. "I don't have enough time."
Finding time for crafting can be challenging, especially if you have a busy schedule. Try setting aside a specific time each day or week to work on a craft project with your child, even if it's just for a few minutes. You can call it “Crafty Wednesdays,” or instead of “Saturday Morning Cartoons,” it can be “Saturday Morning Crafts.” Setting up a craft tray is a great time saver! You can set up the craft materials in an inexpensive tray and leave it as an invitation for your child throughout the week. Also, you can use a service such as Tyrannosaurus Tot that preps all of the craft supplies for you and delivers them directly to your doorstep!
3. "Craft supplies are expensive."
While some craft supplies can be costly, there are many affordable options available. Consider using recycled materials or shopping at discount stores to save money. You can also start with simple projects that require minimal supplies. At Tyrannosaurus Tot, we try to keep the costs to a minimum and ensure we’re giving you and your child the best bang for your buck! This is why we always include a hardcover picture book, all of the craft supplies for two curated crafts, and some fun freebies and extras!
4. "I don't know where to start."
Choosing a craft project can be overwhelming if you're unsure where to begin. Our book and craft boxes help save time from searching through hundreds of crafts on Pinterest and from all of the shopping or searching for the craft supplies needed. Everything comes prepped and ready to use in our book and craft boxes, along with easy-to-read instructions and a picture book to go along with the crafts. Remember, the most important thing is to have fun and enjoy the process!
5. "I don't like the mess."
Crafting can be messy, and some people may feel overwhelmed by the idea of cleaning up after a craft project. However, there are ways to minimize the mess, such as using a plastic tablecloth or newspaper to cover your workspace, using washable materials, and having a designated cleanup area. Remember, the memories and fun experiences you and your child will have crafting together are worth the temporary mess. It’s the quality time together that we’re fostering through reading and crafting together.
Remember, it's not about perfection; it's about making memories and nurturing creativity. So, next time your child is eager to craft, dive in together and enjoy the journey of bonding, learning, and fun. Happy crafting!
