Sponge Boat

July’s book of the month was The Old Boat by Jarrett Pumphrey and Jerome Pumphrey. This book is a beautifully illustrated story that has layers to grow with your child, making it a favorite for years to come.

You and your child will be working together to create a sponge boat that actually floats, so get ready for all of the boat races!

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  1. A dish sponge

  2. Scissors

  3. An index Card

  4. A handheld hole puncher

  5. Masking Tape

  6. A Popsicle stick

Here’s What You’ll Do:

  1. Cut off the corners of your dish sponge on one end. Try to make them symmetrical without cutting off too much (it happens!)

  2. Once your sponge is cut, make a small cut towards the top in the middle of our sponge boat. This is where your popsicle flag will go.

  3. Cut off about 1/4 of your index card. You don’t want your flag to be too long.

  4. Add 2 holes, slightly overlapping, toward the top, in the middle of the index card, and toward the bottom, in the middle of the index card.

  5. Lay strips of tape horizontally or vertically across the index card. *Be sure not to cover the holes fully. You can also precut the strips of tape before applying them to the index card.

  6. Insert the popsicle stick through the front of the bottom hole and pull it out at the top hole. *The index card may be slightly bent, and that is okay. We want it to look like a flag.

  7. Insert your flag into the hole on the sponge. Be sure not to press too hard, or the popsicle stick will go all the way through. *If it does, do not panic. It will still float

  8. Fill up a bowl or tub with water and watch your new sponge boat float!

This is, by far, one of our coolest crafts and one my children enjoy the most!
